Abstract

Brake pads is an important part of a motor vehicle that plays a role in reducing speed and stopping the vehicle. Asbestos material fibers when inhaled can affect the body by causing asbestosis. Palm kernel shells are emerging as an economical and innovative alternative material in the development of more environmentally friendly brake lining materials. If the volume fraction value of palm kernel shell is reduced, the flexibility value of the composite material increases. The comparison of the volume fraction of 20% palm kernel shell filler is obtained at 17.908 MPa, at 15% it is 20.423 MPa, and at 5% it is 29.396 MPa. The average hardness value for variation V1 (20%) is 71.13 HRR, which is the highest value among the three variations. For variation V2 (15%), the average hardness value dropped to 62.75 HRR. As for the V3 (5%) variation, the average hardness value is even lower, at 46.43 HRR. Compared to the hardness value of commercial brake linings, only sample V1 and sample V2 meet because the range of hardness values of commercial brake linings is 52 HRF-96 HRF.

Additional Information: Kampas rem merupakan bagian penting dari kendaraan bermotor yang berperan dalam mengurangi kecepatan dan menghentikan kendaraan. Serat material asbestos ketika terhirup dapat berdampak pada tubuh dengan menyebabkan asbestosis. Cangkang kelapa sawit muncul sebagai alternatif bahan yang ekonomis dan inovatif dalam pengembangan material kampas rem yang lebih ramah lingkungan. Jika nilai fraksi volume cangkang kelapa sawit berkurang, nilai kelenturan material komposit meningkat. Perbandingan fraksi volume filler cangkang kelapa sawit 20% didapat sebesar 17,908 MPa, pada 15% didapat 20,423 MPa, dan pada 5% yaitu sebesar 29,396 MPa. Pada kekersaan nilai rata-rata kekerasan untuk variasi V1 (20%) adalah 71,13 HRR, yang merupakan nilai tertinggi di antara ketiga variasi. Untuk variasi V2 (15%), nilai rata-rata kekerasan turun menjadi 62,75 HRR. Sedangkan untuk variasi V3 (5%), nilai rata-rata kekerasan lebih rendah lagi, yaitu 46,43 HRR. Dibandingkan dengan nilai kekerasan kampas rem komersil, hanya sampel V1 dan sampel V2 yang memenuhi karena range nilai kekeras kampas rem komersil sebesar 52 HRF-96 HRF.
