Abstract

Road damage is often caused by heavy traffic loads, too high temperatures, and increasing vehicle volumes. This can be prevented by improving the quality of asphalt which acts as a binder for aggregates. PVC can be used as a filler in AC-WC mixes because it can increase the elasticity of asphalt and its resistance to water. This study discusses the effect of using PVC waste as filler in asphalt concrete wearing course (AC-WC) mixtures using polymer modified asphalt which aims to determine the characteristics of aggregate, asphalt, and PVC powder filler and to determine the effect of adding PVC powder waste to asphalt mixtures (AC-WC) as filler on marshall characteristics using polymer modified asphalt. The tests were conducted using the marshall testing method with variations in the planned asphalt content of 4.5%, 5%, 5.5%, 6%, 6.5% and variations in the addition of PVC powder 0%, 3%, 6% and 9% of the filler weight percentage. The results showed that the stability value of the mixture increased until it reached the optimum point at 6% PVC powder content with 6.5% asphalt content. The flow value of the mixture with added PVC powder was lower than the mixture without added PVC powder. This shows that the addition of PVC powder as filler can increase the stability and durability of asphalt in resisting traffic load and permanent deformation.
