Abstract

Particle board is an artificial board made from sawmill waste or cellulose material which is bonded using adhesive and other additional materials using a fairly high pressure, temperature process and over a certain period of time. The use of wood as a raw material for making particle board can be replaced using other materials. Mixed materials that can be used in making particle board are palm oil waste such as fronds and empty palm fruit bunches. This palm oil waste can be used for purposes such as furniture, and others. Therefore, palm fronds and empty fruit bunches can be alternative materials for making particle board. In this research, palm fronds were used as filler with varying mesh sizes of 35, 60, and 80. The percentages used in this research were 50% palm frond particles, 15% empty palm fruit bunch fiber, 20% PVAc, and 15% epoxy resin. This research uses a single punch cold press compaction process at a pressure of 30 bar within 120 minutes and a curing process at a temperature of 150°C for 60 minutes. This research will obtain the best data on density, water content, thickness expansion, modulus of rupture, and modulus of elasticity on mesh 80. The test results obtained a density of 0.877 g/cm3, water content 4.6%, thickness expansion 1.13%, modulus of rupture 201.71 kgf/cm2, and the modulus of elasticity is 11012.92 kgf/cm2. All particle board specimens meet SNI 03-2105-2006 standards. However, the modulus of elasticity does not meet the standard criteria for particle board.

Additional Information: Papan partikel ialah papan buatan yang terbuat dari limbah gergaji kayu atau bahan selulosa yang diikat menggunakan perekat dan bahan tambahan lainnya dengan proses tekanan, suhu yang cukup tinggi dan dalam waktu tertentu. Penggunaan kayu sebagai bahan baku pembuatan papan partikel dapat digantikan menggunakan bahan lain. Bahan campuran yang dapat dimanfaatkan pada pembuatan papan partikel adalah limbah kelapa sawit seperti pelepah dan tandan kosong kelapa sawit. Limbah kelapa sawit ini dapat diaplikasikan untuk keperluan seperti mebel atau furniture, dan lainnya. Oleh karena itu, pelepah dan tandan kosong kelapa sawit dapat menjadi bahan alternatif untuk pembuatan papan partikel. Dalam penelitian ini, pelepah kelapa sawit digunakan sebagai pengisi dengan variasi ukuran mesh 35, 60, dan 80. Persentase yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu 50% partikel pelepah kelapa sawit, 15% serat tandan kosong kelapa sawit, 20% PVAc, dan 15% resin epoxy. Penelitian ini menggunakan proses kompaksi cold press single punch pada tekanan 30 bar dalam waktu 120 menit dan proses curing pada suhu 150°C selama 60 menit. Penelitian ini akan memperoleh data densitas, kadar air, pengembangan tebal, modulus of rupture, dan modulus of elasticity terbaik pada mesh 80. Hasil pengujian yang diperoleh densitas 0.877 g/cm3, kadar air 4.6%, pengembangan tebal 1.13%, modulus of rupture 201.71 kgf/cm2, dan modulus of elasticity 11012.92 kgf/cm2. Semua spesimen papan partikel sudah memenuhi standar SNI 03-2105-2006. Namun, modulus of elasticity belum memenuhi standar kriteria papan partikel.
