Abstract
This research is a qualitative research which aims to describe the ability of logical thinking and mathematical adaptive reasoning of seventh grade junior high school students in terms of the field dependent and field independent cognitive styles. The subjects in this study were seventh grade students of Serang City 7 State Junior High School as many as 6 students namely 3 students in field dependent cognitive style and 3 students in independent field cognitive style. The selection of research subjects was based on the results of the cognitive embeded figure test (GEFT) cognitive style test. Data collection techniques in this study are tests of the ability to think logically and adaptive reasoning, observation and interviews. The research results show that: 1) Logical thinking analysis, obtained dependent students are not independent in solving problems, because they have not been able to solve mathematically rational problems perfectly, have not been able to draw the right logical conclusions from the problems given. Then in writing down the solution, do not write down in detail what is known and asked. 2) Analysis of logical thinking, obtained independent students are already independent in solving problems, because they are able to provide reasonable arguments with their own language. Make a logical relationship between different concepts and facts without having to ask questions and guess and test based on reason in their own way. Can write down what is known and asked correctly and solve problems with your own ideas and thoughts. 3) Analysis of adaptive reasoning, obtained dependent students have not been able to give a decision on a problem. In addition, it has not been able to find patterns in a mathematical phenomenon appropriately. Then, dependent students seem confused and doubtful and write down the solution according to the teacher's method. 4) Analysis of adaptive reasoning, obtained independent students are already independent in solving problems, because the three are able to submit allegations with their own thoughts. Examine the validity of an argument in its own way and language. In addition, you can write down what you know and ask correctly and solve problems with your own ideas and thoughts, even though sometimes the answers are not right. 5) In the matter of logical thinking, dependent students only get an average of about 62.27% completeness, while independent students get 82.50%. Likewise in the case of adaptive reasoning, where dependent students only get an average of about 62.50% completeness, while independent students get 83.33%. So it is found that independent students have the ability to think and reason better than dependent students.
