Abstract

This study was aimed (1) to find out what students needs in learning recount text, (2) to find out the process of making the developed material, and (3) to develop appropriate English learning materials for the tenth-grade students. This is a Research and Development (R&D) study. The subjects of this study were students and teacher of tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Serang. The research procedure was simplified and modified the steps from Borg and Gall (1983:775) : conduct the needs analysis, write the course grid, develop the first draft, evaluated by the expert, revise, evaluate the second draft, and implement the material to the students. The data collection instruments were the needs analysis questionnaire, interview, expert judgment questionnaire and students’ assessment questionnaire, which had been analyzed through percentage, mean followed by descriptive analysis's conversion and qualitative data analysis. The result of the first evaluation by two expert judgments showed the material was in range “good” and “very good”. The result of students assessment in preliminary field testing was 78% “valid”. Then, the second evaluation by two experts was in range “very good”. Meanwhile, the result of students assessment in main field testing was 89.88% “valid”. The product was ready to use for tenth-grade students and the english teacher.
