Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the speaking learning strategies commonly used by the students of the 4th semester in Department of English Education of UNTIRTA and the reflection of the strategies to their speaking classroom activities. This research used qualitative method, particularly a case study. This research was conducted at University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa Academic Year 2018/2019. The participants were 33 students which were selected based on purposive sampling. Two types of data namely quantitative and qualitative data were collected in this study. Quantitative data which were obtained from closed-response questionnaire were calculated by using descriptive statistic based on Heigham & Crocker (2009). Besides, qualitative data which were obtained from non-participant observation and semi-structured interview were analyzed based on Miles & Huberman (1994). This study revealed that Metacognitive from Indirect Strategies was the most learning strategies commonly used by students with the highest score 3.73. The Language Learning Strategies were reflected in the participants’ engagement, involvement, activeness during speaking activities in the classroom. It can be concluded from the findings that Language Learning Strategies can be a mediating factor for the students’ activeness and engagement in teaching and learning process.
