Abstract

Based on data from the Cilegon Police Traffic Unit, 19 traffic accidents were recorded along the Pelabuhan Merak Road–Mayjend Soetoyo Road section during 2022–2024, with a 47,37 percent increase in 2024. This study analyzes the influence of road geometric characteristics on traffic accidents by identifying accident-prone locations using the Equivalent Accident Number method and evaluating horizontal curve geometry based on the Road Geometric Design Guidelines No. 13/P/BM/2021 and the Interurban Road Geometric Design Standards issued by Bina Marga in 1997, focusing on two accident-prone curves using field survey and accident data. The results indicate that Curve 1 and Curve 2 are identified as accident-prone locations with Equivalent Accident Number values of 102 and 51, both exceeding the critical value of 49,92. Traffic volumes ranging from 579 to 1465 passenger car units per hour remain below the guideline road capacity of 2800 passenger car units per hour. However, the average vehicle speeds at both curves are lower than the design speed of 60 kilometers per hour, ranging from 10,218 to 18,438 kilometers per hour. From a geometric perspective, the radius of Curve 1 does not meet the minimum standard, while the radius of Curve 2 complies with the guideline. Nevertheless, the stopping sight distance, passing sight distance, and lateral clearance at both curves are below the required standards, contributing to the high rate of traffic accidents.
