Abstract

Education plays an important role in improving the quality of human resources, one of which is through mathematics learning to develop students’ mathematical conceptual understanding. This ability emphasizes connecting, explaining, and applying mathematical concepts appropriately. This study aimed to determine the effect of a contextual teaching and learning approach assisted by teaching aids on junior high school students’ mathematical conceptual understanding. This research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental approach and a nonequivalent control group design. The study was conducted in the odd semester of the 2025/2026 academic year at SMP Negeri 7 Kota Serang, involving all seventh-grade students as the population. The samples consisted of two classes selected using cluster random sampling, namely class VII B as the experimental group and class VII D as the control group. Both groups used teaching aids in the form of a linear equation board (PLSV). The research instrument was a pretest and posttest. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that students who received learning through the contextual approach assisted by teaching aids performed better in mathematical conceptual understanding than those who received expository learning assisted by teaching aids.

Additional Information: Pendidikan berperan penting dalam meningkatkan kualitas sumber daya manusia, salah satunya melalui pembelajaran matematika untuk mengembangkan kemampuan pemahaman konsep matematis. Kemampuan ini menekankan pada kemampuan mengaitkan, menjelaskan, dan menerapkan konsep secara tepat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pendekatan kontekstual berbantuan alat peraga terhadap kemampuan pemahaman konsep matematis siswa SMP. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan pendekatan kuasi eksperimen dan desain nonequivalent control group design. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada semester ganjil tahun ajaran 2025/2026 di SMP Negeri 7 Kota Serang dengan populasi seluruh siswa kelas VII. Sampel penelitian terdiri atas dua kelas yang dipilih menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling, yaitu kelas VII B sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas VII D sebagai kelas kontrol. Kedua kelas menggunakan alat peraga berupa papan persamaan linear satu variabel (PLSV). Instrumen penelitian berupa tes pretest dan posttest. Data dianalisis menggunakan statistika deskriptif dan inferensial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan pemahaman konsep matematis siswa yang mengikuti pembelajaran dengan pendekatan kontekstual berbantuan alat peraga lebih baik dibandingkan siswa yang belajar dengan pembelajaran ekspositori berbantuan alat peraga.
