Abstract

Additional Information: The phenomenon of domestic violence in Indonesia has shown an increasing number of cases from year to year, making it an important social issue to be examined. Mass media, particularly film, plays a significant role in representing social realities, including the issue of domestic violence. The film It Ends with Us (2024), directed by Justin Baldoni, portrays the character of Lily Bloom as a victim of domestic violence. This study aims to examine how domestic violence is represented in the film It Ends with Us. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a constructivist paradigm and Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, which includes the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The research data were obtained from eight scenes depicting domestic violence, collected through observation, documentation, and literature review. The results of the study indicate that the film It Ends with Us represents three forms of domestic violence: physical, psychological, and sexual violence. The representation of violence is conveyed through narrative and visual symbols, such as domestic spaces that are expected to be safe but instead become sites of control and domination. Furthermore, the film represents social myths that perceive violence as an expression of love and as a justification for forgiving the perpetrator. Nevertheless, the film also presents a narrative that emphasizes the victim’s strength to break free from the cycle of violence.
