Abstract

This study investigates the interpersonal communication between K-pop fans and idols during video call events through Herbert Blumer’s Symbolic Interactionism, focusing on meaning, language, and thought. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected from four informants who have participated in video call events. The results show that (1) meaning includes emotional closeness, a sense of appreciation, and a highly valued personal experience. (2) In terms of language, fans use mixed languages (Korean, English, Indonesian) and express nonverbal cues such as smiles, eye contact, and K-pop gestures, while facing technical, psychological, and linguistic barriers. (3) Regarding thought, fans interpret the brief interaction as emotionally impactful, strengthening parasocial bonds and motivating future participation. The study concludes that video call events serve not merely as brief interactions but as symbolic processes that create emotional closeness within K-pop fandom culture.
