Abstract

This study discusses the utilization of used engine oil waste and palm oil mill effluent in powdered form as fillers in epoxy resin composites. The wastes were dried using a rotary dryer until they became powder, then sieved to 100 mesh, and mixed with epoxy resin at a 50:50 volume ratio. The mechanical properties were tested according to ASTM D638 (tensile) and ASTM D256 (Izod impact) standards. The results showed that the composite with used oil filler exhibited better performance compared to the palm oil–based composite. The used oil composite achieved an average tensile strength of 13.69 MPa and a modulus of 2582.86 MPa, while the palm oil composite only reached 7.46 MPa and 1548.46 MPa. In the impact test, the used oil composite absorbed more energy (0.040 J; 0.000332 J/mm²) than the palm oil composite (0.034 J; 0.000286 J/mm²). The higher mechanical properties of the used oil composite are attributed to the carbon residue and metallic particles from engine combustion contained in the waste oil, which enhance stiffness and bonding with the epoxy resin. Meanwhile, palm oil waste contains organic components such as lignin and hemicellulose, which are hydrophilic, resulting in weaker interfacial bonding with the resin.
