Abstract

This study aims to characterize nine genotypes of melon (Cucumis melo L.) resulting from crosses between the Reticulatus, Inodorus, and Makuwa groups. The research was conducted in Karangtengah Pabean Village, Cilegon City, from June to August 2024, using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) as the research method. The results indicate a uniformity of characteristics in several quantitative parameters, such as leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter, and male flower diameter. However, significant variability was observed in qualitative characteristics, including fruit shape and skin type, as well as in quantitative characteristics such as female flower diameter, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, skin thickness, fruit weight, harvest age, and sugar content. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that most of the observed characteristics had significant differences. ANOVA results showed significance in 8 of the 12 parameters indicating the potential of the genotype for further development. This research is expected to contribute to the development of superior local melon varieties that are more diverse and reduce dependence on imported seeds

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakterisasi sembilan genotipe melon (Cucumis melo L.) hasil persilangan antara kelompok Reticulatus, Inodorus, dan Makuwa. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Kelurahan Karangtengah Pabean, Kota Cilegon, pada bulan Juni sampai dengan Agustus 2024, dengan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) sebagai metode penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya keseragaman karakteristik pada beberapa parameter kuantitatif, seperti panjang daun, lebar daun, diameter batang, dan diameter bunga jantan. Namun, variabilitas yang nyata diamati pada karakteristik kualitatif, meliputi bentuk buah dan jenis kulit, serta pada karakteristik kuantitatif seperti diameter bunga betina, panjang buah, diameter buah, tebal daging buah, tebal kulit, bobot buah, umur panen, dan kadar gula. Analisis ragam (ANOVA) menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar karakteristik yang diamati memiliki perbedaan yang nyata. Hasil ANOVA menunjukkan signifikansi pada 8 dari 12 parameter yang menunjukkan potensi genotipe tersebut untuk pengembangan lebih lanjut. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi bagi pengembangan varietas melon lokal unggul yang lebih beragam dan mengurangi ketergantungan terhadap benih impor.
