Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the effect of heat exposure on the mechanical properties, particularly flexural strength and hardness, of brake pads made from natural composite materials based on eggshells and bamboo fibers. The composites were fabricated with varying volume fractions of eggshell and bamboo fiber, followed by flexural testing using ASTM D790 and hardness testing with Shore D durometer according to ASTM D2240. Heat exposure was applied at 200°C for 1 hour to simulate operational conditions of motor vehicle braking systems. The results showed that the sample with full bamboo fiber composition (Sample C) exhibited the highest flexural strength, with an average Modulus of Rupture (MOR) of 77.26 MPa. Meanwhile, the sample with full eggshell composition (Sample A) demonstrated the highest surface hardness of 70.24 Shore D. These findings indicate that bamboo fiber significantly enhances flexural performance, whereas eggshell contributes to higher surface hardness. FTIR spectrum analysis also revealed distinct chemical compositions among samples. This research concludes that the combination of these natural materials presents a promising, eco-friendly alternative for the development of asbestos-free brake pads.

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh paparan panas terhadap sifat mekanik, khususnya kekuatan lentur dan kekerasan, dari kampas rem berbahan dasar komposit alami cangkang telur dan serat bambu. Komposit dibuat dengan variasi fraksi volume cangkang telur dan serat bambu, kemudian dilakukan pengujian kekuatan lentur menggunakan metode ASTM D790 dan pengujian kekerasan menggunakan Durometer Shore D sesuai standar ASTM D2240. Paparan panas dilakukan pada suhu 200°C selama 1 jam untuk mensimulasikan kondisi operasional kendaraan bermotor. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa sampel dengan komposisi penuh serat bambu (Sampel C) memiliki kekuatan lentur tertinggi dengan nilai Modulus of Rupture (MOR) rata-rata sebesar 77,26 MPa. Sementara itu, sampel dengan komposisi penuh cangkang telur (Sampel A) menunjukkan nilai kekerasan tertinggi, yaitu 70,24 Shore D. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa serat bambu berkontribusi besar terhadap peningkatan kekuatan lentur, sedangkan cangkang telur memperkuat kekerasan permukaan komposit. Spektrum FTIR juga menunjukkan perbedaan komposisi kimia yang signifikan antar sampel. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa kombinasi bahan alami ini dapat menjadi alternatif dalam pengembangan kampas rem bebas asbes. | ||||||
