Abstract

This research aims to analysed English education students implement basic teaching skills in the microteaching class and the challenges they faced during the process. Conducted as a case study at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University, the study focuses on eight basic teaching skills: opening, reinforcement, questioning, explaining, variation, small group discussion guiding, classroom management, and closing. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through structured observation, interviews with students and lecturers, and documentation involved 12 participants of sixth-semester students. Findings show that most students were able to implement strong performance in several skills. Explaining skills and classroom management both reached a perfect performance score of 100%, followed by closing skills at 95.8%, and opening skills at 93.75%. Reinforcement and variation skills were also high, at 89.58% and 85.42% respectively. Meanwhile, questioning skills scored 75%, and small group discussion guiding skills reached 81.25%. The main challenges reported by students include nervousness, difficulty maintaining classroom engagement, and lack of confidence when applying theoretical skills in a real teaching scenario. This study highlights the importance of strengthening microteaching programs to better bridge the gap between theory and practice and to support education students in basic teaching skills necessary for professional teaching.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penerapan keterampilan mengajar dasar oleh mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa Inggris dalam kelas microteaching serta tantangan yang mereka hadapi selama proses tersebut. Dilakukan sebagai studi kasus di Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, penelitian ini berfokus pada delapan keterampilan mengajar dasar: pembukaan, penguatan, bertanya, menjelaskan, variasi, membimbing diskusi kelompok kecil, manajemen kelas, dan penutupan. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui observasi terstruktur, wawancara dengan mahasiswa dan dosen, serta dokumentasi yang melibatkan 12 peserta mahasiswa semester keenam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar mahasiswa mampu menerapkan kinerja yang kuat dalam beberapa keterampilan. Keterampilan menjelaskan dan manajemen kelas keduanya mencapai skor kinerja sempurna 100%, diikuti oleh keterampilan penutupan sebesar 95,8%, dan keterampilan pembukaan sebesar 93,75%. Keterampilan penguatan dan variasi juga tinggi, masing-masing sebesar 89,58% dan 85,42%. Sementara itu, keterampilan bertanya mencapai 75%, dan keterampilan membimbing diskusi kelompok kecil mencapai 81,25%. Tantangan utama yang dilaporkan oleh mahasiswa meliputi rasa gugup, kesulitan mempertahankan keterlibatan kelas, dan kurangnya kepercayaan diri saat menerapkan keterampilan teoritis dalam situasi pengajaran nyata. Studi ini menyoroti pentingnya memperkuat program microteaching untuk menjembatani kesenjangan antara teori dan praktik, serta mendukung mahasiswa pendidikan dalam keterampilan pengajaran dasar yang diperlukan untuk pengajaran profesional.
