Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of role-playing technique in improving students' speaking ability at the high school level. The research design is quantitative, using a quasi-experimental approach that includes a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. This study's population consists of 368 students in grade X at SMAN 4 Kota Serang, with a sample size of 60 students divided into two classes: experimental (X-10) and control (X-11). An oral test was used to collect data, which assessed grammar, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. The collected data was examined using content validity, inter-rater reliability, normality test, homogeneity test, independent sample t-test, and N-Gain test. The study's findings show that using role-playing technique considerably improves students' speaking skills. The average N-Gain percentage in the experimental class was 50.25%, compared to 29.99% in the control class. The independent t-test (Sig. 2-tailed) revealed a significant difference (0.000 < 0.05) between the experimental and control groups. As a result, it is recommended that English teachers use role-playing technique to help students improve their speaking ability.
