Abstract
Reading comprehension is essential to students’ academic success at all educational levels. However, despite years of English instruction, many Indonesian students still struggle to fully comprehend written texts. To address this issue, there is a need to investigate students’ ability in reading comprehension based on the four levels of comprehension skills, using a fantasy narrative text aligned with the syllabus. Therefore, this study aims to identify students’ ability, determine the extent of their performance, and understand the contributing factors in reading comprehension across the four levels of comprehension skills. A mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design was employed, involving 37 ninth-grade students from SMPN 1 Tigaraksa. Data were collected through a reading test, classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings revealed that students demonstrated varied levels of comprehension ability, performing best at the literal level, followed by creative, interpretive, and critical levels. Only a few students reached the Excellent and Good categories, while most fell within Moderate, Limited, and Poor categories, especially in the higher-level comprehension skills. While students applied various self-oriented skills and strategies, their performance was also influenced by personal, instructional, environmental, and relational factors that supported their comprehension across all levels. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a clear need for instructional focus on developing students’ higher-level comprehension skills.

| Additional Information: | Pemahaman bacaan merupakan keterampilan penting yang sangat berperan dalam keberhasilan akademik siswa di semua jenjang pendidikan. Namun, meskipun telah mempelajari Bahasa Inggris selama bertahun-tahun, banyak siswa di Indonesia masih mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami teks tertulis secara mendalam. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan ini, perlu dilakukan kajian terhadap kemampuan membaca siswa berdasarkan empat tingkat keterampilan pemahaman, dengan menggunakan teks naratif fantasi yang sesuai dengan silabus. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kemampuan siswa, mengetahui sejauh mana pencapaian mereka, serta memahami faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi pemahaman bacaan pada keempat level keterampilan tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran (mixed-methods) dengan desain eksplanatori sekuensial, melibatkan 37 siswa kelas IX dari SMPN 1 Tigaraksa. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes membaca, observasi kelas, wawancara semi-terstruktur, dan diskusi kelompok terarah (FGD). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan pemahaman siswa bervariasi. Mereka menunjukkan pencapaian terbaik pada level literal, diikuti oleh level kreatif, interpretatif, dan kritis. Hanya sedikit siswa yang berada dalam kategori Sangat Baik dan Baik, sementara sebagian besar berada pada kategori Sedang, Terbatas, dan Kurang, terutama pada keterampilan pemahaman tingkat tinggi. Meskipun siswa menggunakan berbagai strategi dan keterampilan mandiri dalam membaca, kemampuan mereka juga dipengaruhi oleh faktor pribadi, pengajaran, lingkungan, serta hubungan sosial yang mendukung proses pemahaman mereka di semua level. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa dibutuhkan perhatian khusus dalam pengajaran untuk mengembangkan keterampilan pemahaman tingkat tinggi siswa secara lebih efektif. | |||||||||
