Abstract
This research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of green-synthesized carbon dots (CDs) derived from bitter melon (Momordica charantia) peel extract, with the objective of assessing their applicability as fluorescent probes for the detection of Fe³⁺ heavy metal ions. The CDs were fabricated via a microwave-assisted method, which is recognized for its simplicity, rapid processing, and environmental sustainability. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy revealed a prominent absorption peak at 239 nm, attributed to π→π* transitions of C=C bonds, and a minor peak at 668 nm. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis demonstrated two primary emission peaks at 457 nm and 490 nm. Upon the introduction of FeCl₃ at a concentration of 10⁻⁵ M, a substantial enhancement in PL intensity was observed, increasing from 15.640 to 22.988 and from 15.907 to 27.165, respectively. This fluorescence enhancement is presumed to result from complexation between Fe³⁺ ions and surface functional groups on the CDs, which suppresses non-radiative recombination pathways and promotes radiative emission processes. The findings suggest that these green-synthesized carbon dots, prepared through microwave irradiation, exhibit promising potential as environmentally benign, turn-on detection sensors for Fe³⁺ ion detection

Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mensintesis dan mengkarakterisasi carbon dots hasil green synthesis berbasis ekstrak kulit pare (Momordica charantia) serta mengevaluasi potensinya sebagai detektor ion logam berat Fe³⁺. Sintesis dilakukan menggunakan metode iradiasi gelombang mikro yang sederhana, cepat, dan ramah lingkungan. Karakterisasi dilakukan menggunakan spektroskopi UV-Vis dan fotoluminesensi (PL). Hasil UV-Vis menunjukkan puncak absorbansi pada panjang gelombang 239 nm yang mengindikasikan adanya transisi π→π* dari ikatan C=C, serta puncak minor pada 668 nm. Spektrum PL menunjukkan dua puncak emisi utama pada panjang gelombang 457 nm dan 490 nm. Penambahan FeCl₃ dengan konsentrasi 10⁻6 M menghasilkan peningkatan intensitas emisi pada kedua puncak tersebut, masing-masing dari 15.640 menjadi 22.988 dan dari 15.907 menjadi 27.165. Peningkatan ini diduga disebabkan oleh interaksi antara Fe³⁺ dengan gugus fungsional di permukaan C-dots yang mengurangi pusat non-radiatif dan meningkatkan efisiensi transisi radiatif. Berdasarkan hasil ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa green synthesis carbon dots dari kulit pare yang disintesis melalui iradiasi gelombang mikro berpotensi sebagai material detektor ion Fe³⁺ dengan mekanisme turn-on detection, serta memberikan solusi berbasis bahan alami untuk deteksi logam berat di lingkungan. | |||||||||
