Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the influence of using problem-based learning on the students' reading comprehension in the descriptive text in 8th grade of SMPN 1 Karangtanjung. The researcher used quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design for conducting the research. The population of this research was the eight-grade students of SMPN 1 Karangtanjung. The samples were VIII E and VII F were put into a control group and an experimental group, each group consists of 31 students. Pretest was given to the groups at the beginning of the phase. Then the treatment was given twice to the experimental group. To find the effect, a post-test was given to the groups. The researcher used Pearson Product Moment and Cronbach Alpha Theory using SPSS to make the instrument was valid and reliable. In testing the hypothesis, the researcher used a Paired t-test using SPSS to know the influence of using problem-based learning on the students' reading comprehension in the descriptive text in 8th grade of SMPN 1 Karangtanjung. The calculation shows the result of Sig. value (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). It can be concluded that there is a significant influence of using problem-based learning on the students' reading comprehension in the descriptive text in 8th grade of SMPN 1 Karangtanjung. It is suggested problem-based learning can be used by an English teacher to teaching reading.

Additional Information: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan pembelajaran berbasis masalah terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa dalam teks deskriptif di kelas 8 SMPN 1 Karangtanjung. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain kuasi-eksperimental untuk melaksanakan penelitian. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas delapan SMPN 1 Karangtanjung. Sampelnya adalah VIII E dan VII F yang dimasukkan ke dalam kelompok kontrol dan kelompok eksperimen, masing-masing kelompok terdiri dari 31 siswa. Pretes diberikan kepada kelompok di awal fase. Kemudian perlakuan diberikan dua kali kepada kelompok eksperimen. Untuk mengetahui pengaruhnya, post-test diberikan kepada kelompok-kelompok tersebut. Peneliti menggunakan Pearson Product Moment dan Teori Cronbach Alpha dengan menggunakan SPSS untuk memastikan instrumen tersebut valid dan reliabel. Dalam menguji hipotesis, peneliti menggunakan uji-t berpasangan dengan SPSS untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan pembelajaran berbasis masalah terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa dalam teks deskriptif kelas 8 SMPN 1 Karangtanjung. Hasil perhitungan menunjukkan nilai Sig. (2-tailed) lebih rendah dari 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penggunaan pembelajaran berbasis masalah terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa dalam teks deskriptif kelas 8 SMPN 1 Karangtanjung. Disarankan agar pembelajaran berbasis masalah dapat digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris untuk mengajar membaca.
