Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between cognitive ability and the ability to solve mathematical story problems in grade V students of SDN Serang 3, focusing on the material of integers and decimals. The background of this study is the importance of mathematical ability in basic education and the potential influence of cognitive ability on mathematical achievement. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research sample consisted of 40 grade V students. Data were collected through test instruments to measure cognitive ability and the ability to solve mathematical story problems. Data were analyzed using inferential statistical tests, including correlation and simple regression tests. The results of the study showed a positive and very strong relationship between cognitive ability and the ability to solve mathematical story problems. The correlation coefficient (r) of 0.97 indicates a very strong relationship. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.95 indicates that 95% of the variation in the ability to solve mathematical story problems can be explained by cognitive ability. Simple regression analysis also showed a significant positive relationship between the two variables. These findings confirm a significant relationship between cognitive ability and the ability to solve mathematical story problems in grade V students of SDN Serang 3. The higher the students' cognitive ability, the better their ability to solve mathematical story problems. These results underscore the importance of developing cognitive abilities in efforts to improve students' mathematics achievement in elementary schools. Further research can explore other factors that influence this relationship and develop effective learning interventions.

Latar belakang penelitian ini adalah pentingnya kemampuan matematika dalam pendidikan dasar dan potensi pengaruh kemampuan kognitif terhadap prestasi matematika. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Sampel penelitian terdiri dari 40 peserta didik kelas V. Data dikumpulkan melalui instrumen tes untuk mengukur kemampuan kognitif dan kemampuan menyelesaikan soal cerita matematika. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji statistik inferensial, termasuk uji korelasi dan regresi sederhana. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan positif dan sangat kuat antara kemampuan kognitif dan kemampuan menyelesaikan soal cerita matematika. Koefisien korelasi (r) sebesar 0,97 menunjukkan hubungan yang sangat kuat. Koefisien determinasi (R²) sebesar 0,95 menunjukkan bahwa 95% variasi dalam kemampuan menyelesaikan soal cerita matematika dapat dijelaskan oleh kemampuan kognitif. Analisis regresi sederhana juga menunjukkan hubungan positif yang signifikan antara kedua variabel. Temuan ini mengkonfirmasi adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara kemampuan kognitif dan kemampuan menyelesaikan soal cerita matematika pada peserta didik kelas V SDN Serang 3. Semakin tinggi kemampuan kognitif siswa, semakin baik pula kemampuan mereka dalam menyelesaikan soal cerita matematika. Hasil ini menggarisbawahi pentingnya pengembangan kemampuan kognitif dalam upaya meningkatkan prestasi matematika siswa di sekolah dasar. Penelitian selanjutnya dapat mengeksplorasi faktor-faktor lain yang mempengaruhi hubungan ini dan mengembangkan intervensi pembelajaran yang efektif.
