Abstract
This research aims to explain the initial conditions of Merak Port, the form of management policies by the Dutch East Indies colonial government, and the impact of these policies on the development of the port. The method used is the historical method with the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that Merak Port was originally a small port with limited local activities. The Dutch East Indies colonial government saw the strategic potential of the Merak area as a link between Java and Sumatra, so various development and management policies were implemented. Through the construction of docks, railways and ferry transportation systems, Merak Port developed into an important node in the logistics network and inter-island mobility. The colonial policy had a major impact on changes in the function and role of the port, and laid the foundation for port development in the post-independence period. Merak Port is concrete evidence of the strategic role of maritime infrastructure in supporting connectivity and regional integration in Indonesia.

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fakta dari Sejarah berdirinya Pelabuhan Merak pada masa Hindia Belanda dan bagaimana perkembangan Pelabuhan Merak pada masa pengelolaan Hindia Belanda pada tahun 1912 ̶ 1956. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode Sejarah, meliputi : Heuristik (Pengumpulan data), Kritik Sumber, Interpretasi, dan Historiografi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Pelabuhan Merak berdiri pada tahun 1912 oleh Pemerintah Hindia Belanda yang diawasi oleh Perusahaan kereta api Staatsspoorwegen, pembangunan pelabuhan ini juga bertujuan untuk mendukung distribusi barang yang dikirim ke luar negeri dalam meningkatkan konektivitas antar Pulau Jawa dan Sumatera. Tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai titik penghubung transportasi, tetapi juga memberikan kontribusi terhadap pertumbuhan ekonomi lokal dan nasional. Sumber mencatat bahwa pelabuhan ini mendukung kegiatan ekspor dan impor, serta meningkatkan aksesibilitas bagi masyarakat sekitar, yang berakhir pada perubahan sosial dan ekonomi yang signifikan. Perkembangan Pelabuhan Merak pada masa pengelolaan Hindia Belanda, salah satunya yaitu Staatsspoorwegen (SS), Staatsspoorwegen memiliki peran penting dalam pengelolaan dan pengembangan pelabuhan ini. Kegiatan yang dilakukan pada masa ini adalah untuk membantu penyaluran barang yang dikirim dari kereta api yang akan di bawa ke luar negeri. Pelabuhan ini menjadi faktor kunci dalam menghubungkan berbagai daerah dan memperkuat perekonomian lokal. | |||||||||
