Abstract
This study examines the effect of Twitter on eighth-grade students’ writing skills in short messages at SMPN 10 Kota Serang. A quasi-experimental design was used, with purposive sampling to assign class VIII-C as the experimental group and class VIII-D as the control group. The experimental class was taught using Twitter as a learning medium, while the control class received conventional method. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests in short message writing format. The results showed that the mean post-test score of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class. An independent sample t-test yielded a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.0001, which is less than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These findings confirmed that the integration of Twitter improves vocabulary, grammar, and organization. It helps students structure short messages better by encouraging clarity and conciseness. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of Twitter has a significant effect on students writing skills, particularly in writing short messages. Based on these findings, it is recommended that educators integrate social media platforms like Twitter into language learning to enhance students’ writing skills especially in functional texts.

Additional Information: | Penelitian ini menguji pengaruh Twitter terhadap keterampilan menulis siswa kelas VIII dalam pesan singkat di SMPN 10 Kota Serang. Desain kuasi-eksperimental digunakan, dengan pengambilan sampel secara purposif untuk menetapkan kelas VIII-C sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan kelas VIII-D sebagai kelompok kontrol. Kelas eksperimen diajar dengan menggunakan Twitter sebagai media pembelajaran, sedangkan kelas kontrol menerima metode konvensional. Data dikumpulkan melalui pre-test dan post-test dalam format menulis pesan singkat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata post-test kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi daripada kelas kontrol. Uji-t sampel independen menghasilkan nilai signifikansi (Sig. 2-tailed) sebesar 0,0001, yang kurang dari 0,05, yang menunjukkan adanya perbedaan yang signifikan secara statistik antara kedua kelompok. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa integrasi Twitter meningkatkan kosakata, tata bahasa, dan organisasi. Hal ini membantu siswa menyusun pesan singkat lebih baik dengan mendorong kejelasan dan keringkasan. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Twitter memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan menulis siswa, khususnya dalam menulis pesan singkat. Berdasarkan temuan ini, disarankan agar para pendidik mengintegrasikan platform media sosial seperti Twitter ke dalam pembelajaran bahasa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa, terutama dalam teks fungsional. | |||||||||
