Abstract
Amid the influx of foreign cultures into Indonesia, Indonesians continue to preserve their cultural identity, which is reflected in various creative works such as painting, photography, music, and films that incorporate local cultural values. This study aims to analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the photojournalistic work titled "From Ancestors to Ancestors," which portrays the Ma’nene ritual of the Toraja Tribe. Using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method, the research identifies visual and textual signs in the photos to uncover the cultural messages conveyed. The unit of analysis consists of 5 out of 12 photos published on Antara Foto, selected based on their relevance to the study. The analysis is conducted in two stages: denotative meaning as a factual documentation of the ritual without alteration, and connotative meaning that represents respect, affection, and the spiritual beliefs of the Toraja community. The findings reveal that these photos not only serve as documentation but also as a medium to reinforce the cultural identity of the Toraja people. The myths depicted in the photos highlight the belief that caring for ancestral remains brings blessings and maintains connections with the spiritual realm.

| Additional Information: | Di tengah maraknya budaya luar yang masuk ke Indonesia, masyarakat Indonesia tetap mampu mempertahankan eksistensi budayanya, yang tercermin dalam berbagai karya anak bangsa seperti seni lukis, fotografi, seni musik, dan film yang memasukkan nilai-nilai budaya lokal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis makna denotatif, konotatif, dan mitos dalam foto jurnalistik bertajuk "Dari Leluhur untuk Leluhur" yang menggambarkan ritual Ma’nene Suku Toraja. Dengan menggunakan metode analisis semiotika Roland Barthes, penelitian ini mengidentifikasi tanda-tanda visual dan teks pada foto untuk mengungkap pesan budaya yang disampaikan. Unit analisis terdiri dari 5 dari 12 foto yang dipublikasikan di Antara Foto, dipilih berdasarkan relevansinya dengan penelitian. Analisis dilakukan dalam dua tahap: makna denotatif sebagai bentuk dokumentasi nyata ritual tanpa pengeditan, dan makna konotatif yang merepresentasikan penghormatan, kasih sayang, serta keyakinan spiritual masyarakat Toraja. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa foto-foto ini tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai dokumentasi, tetapi juga sebagai media yang memperkuat identitas budaya Toraja. Mitos yang ditampilkan dalam foto mengungkapkan keyakinan bahwa perawatan jenazah leluhur membawa berkah dan menjaga hubungan dengan dunia roh. | |||||||||
