Abstract

Digital Educational Escape Room (DEER) is a gamification teaching method that has enhanced students’ reading comprehension. This study aimed to describe the implementation of the DEER method in teaching narrative texts, investigate the improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement, and analyze students’ perspectives. A collaborative action research (CAR) approach was employed over two cycles with 38 eleventh-grade students at SMAN 6 Kota Serang. Mixed-methods research, including pre-tests, post-tests, observations, interviews, and documentation, was utilized. Results showed a significant increase in students’ reading comprehension scores. The average pre-test score was 66.97, with only 26.31% meeting the minimum standard of competency (MSC). After cycle 1, the average score increased to 84.74 (78.94% meeting the MSC) and further to 95.79 in cycle 2 (100% meeting the MSC). The DEER method effectively engaged students through interactive activities, such as code-breaking and puzzle-solving, fostering collaborative problem-solving and enhancing essential skills. Students expressed positive feedback, highlighting increased engagement, motivation, and development of critical thinking, communication, and time management skills. This study concludes that the DEER method is an effective and enjoyable teaching tool for enhancing students’ reading comprehension in the context of narrative text instruction.

Additional Information: Digital Educational Escape Room (DEER) adalah metode pengajaran gamifikasi yang telah meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan implementasi metode DEER dalam pengajaran teks naratif, menyelidiki peningkatan pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa, dan menganalisis perspektif siswa. Pendekatan penelitian tindakan kolaboratif (PTK) digunakan dilakukan dalam dua siklus dengan 38 siswa kelas sebelas di SMAN 6 Kota Serang. Penelitian dengan metode campuran, termasuk pre-test, post-test, observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi, digunakan, wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi, telah digunakan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan dalam skor pemahaman membaca siswa. Setelah siklus 1, skor rata-rata rata-rata meningkat menjadi 84,74 (78,94% memenuhi KKM) dan selanjutnya menjadi 95,79 pada siklus 2 (100% memenuhi KKM). pada siklus 2 (100% memenuhi KKM). Metode DEER secara efektif melibatkan siswa melalui kegiatan interaktif, seperti pemecahan kode dan pemecahan teka-teki, mendorong pemecahan masalah secara kolaboratif dan meningkatkan keterampilan penting. Siswa mengungkapkan umpan balik positif, menyoroti peningkatan keterlibatan, motivasi, dan pengembangan kemampuan berpikir kritis, komunikasi, dan manajemen waktu. Ini Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa metode DEER adalah alat pengajaran yang efektif dan menyenangkan yang efektif dan menyenangkan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dalam konteks teks naratif instruksi.
