Abstract
The research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ChatGPT on the writing skills at the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Puloampel. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving a population of 90 students across three classes. Through purposive sampling, 60 students were selected from two distinct classes, with XI Science 1 as the experimental class and XI Science 2 as the control class. Data collection was conducted using pre-tests and post-tests in essay format. The analysis of pre-test and post-test results revealed that the mean score of the experimental class utilizing ChatGPT was higher than the control class, which did not employ ChatGPT. The independent t-test yielded a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, indicating a result less than 0.05, thereby leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Additionally, the effect size test showed 1.18, which means that, based on Cohen's interpretation, the category was “high effect.” It means that ChatGPT was effective on students’ writing skills at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Puloampel in high effect, especially in the explanation text material. It is suggested that ChatGPT is an effective medium for enhancing students’ writing skills.

Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi keefektifan ChatGPT pada siswa kelas sebelas SMAN 1 Puloampel. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kuasi-eksperimental yang melibatkan populasi 90 siswa dari tiga kelas. Melalui purposive sampling, 60 siswa dipilih dari dua kelas yang berbeda, dengan kelas XI IPA 1 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas XI IPA 2 sebagai kelas kontrol. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan pre-test dan post-test dalam bentuk esai. Analisis hasil pre-test dan post-test menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata kelas eksperimen yang menggunakan ChatGPT lebih tinggi daripada kelas kontrol yang tidak menggunakan ChatGPT. Uji-t independen menghasilkan nilai signifikansi (Sig. 2-tailed) sebesar 0,000, yang menunjukkan kurang dari 0,05, sehingga mengarah pada penolakan hipotesis nol (H0) dan menerima hipotesis alternatif (Ha). Selain itu, uji effect size menunjukkan angka 1,18, yang berarti berdasarkan interpretasi Cohen's, kategorinya adalah “efek yang tinggi”. Ini berarti bahwa ChatGPT adalah efektif terhadap kemampuan menulis siswa kelas XI SMAN 1 Puloampel dengan efek yang tinggi, khususnya pada materi teks eksplanasi.
