Abstract

This research is conducted because the researcher discovered different types of language styles used by the students in English classroom interaction during the preliminary research. The researcher found that not only formal style used by the students, but also casual style and intimate style. This research aims to explore the use of language styles by the students in English classroom interaction at eleventh grade of SMAN 06 Kota Serang by using Martin Joos’s and Janet Holmes’s theories. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method and employed observation, semi-structured interview, and focus group discussion. The participants of this research are 41 students of XI C-1 at SMAN 06 Kota Serang. Based on the observation and interview results, four types of language styles were used by the students, which is formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. Formal style (50%) is the most dominant language style used by the students. Furthermore, based on the interview and FGD results, the use of different types of language styles by the students were also influenced by the factors of setting, participant, function, and topic. Thus, it can be concluded that XI C-1 students were using different types of language styles which influenced by several factors in English classroom interaction.
