Abstract

This study analyzes the performance of a Savonius vertical axis wind turbine prototype in a small-scale wind tunnel, focusing on wind speeds ranging from 1 m/s to 5 m/s. Key performance metrics such as drag force, rotational speed (RPM), and power coefficient (Cp) were evaluated. Results indicated that the turbine's efficiency and mechanical power output are significantly influenced by wind speed variations, with optimal performance observed at 3 m/s, where the turbine achieved a peak tip speed ratio (TSR) of 1.16 and a consistent Cp of 0.074. Additionally, the study synthesizes insights from various research on Savonius turbine design modifications, including deflector plates, wind collectors, and innovative rotor geometries, highlighting their potential to enhance turbine performance. Further, the impact of blade configurations, diameter variations, and the integration of Savonius and Darrieus turbines are explored. Modifications to blade height, radius, shape, and the inclusion of air gaps and blade layers are also discussed for optimizing aerodynamic efficiency and power generation. The findings provide a comprehensive analysis of the turbine's performance, offering valuable insights for future research and development in improving the efficiency of Savonius vertical axis wind turbines.
