Abstract

This research applied documentary film to improve students’ descriptive writing ability at the tenth grade of SMAN 02 Pandeglang. It is located on Jalan Pendidikan Ciekek Karaton Pandeglang, Banten Province.The subject of this research was X-1 grade which consists of 38 students. The objective of the research is to find out the improvement of students’ writing descriptive text ability after applying documentary film as a media in the classroom. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of two cycles. This research used quantitative and qualitative research method to implement action research. The action research was supported by the data. The quantitative data was students’ test to show the improvement of students’ writing descriptive text score. In qualitative data showed the process of students’ descriptive writing ability. The use of quantitative research method will be supported by qualitative data. The instruments used in collecting the data were observation sheet and test. The process of teaching descriptive writing text ran well. The researcher asked students to read and analyze a text before write a descriptive text based on documentary film. The result of the research showed that there was students’ improvement in writing descriptive text. The average score of pre-test was 60, 95, post-test 1 was 68, 38, and post-test 2 was 78, 38. There was improvement score 7, 43 from pre-test to the post-test 1. In the post-test 2 there was improvement score 10 from post-test 1. In conclusion, applying documentary film is one of the best media to improve students’ descriptive writing ability. Documentary film can be the teacher’s alternative ways to improve students’ descriptive writing ability at the tenth grade of the student senior high school.
