Abstract

The research is dealing with improving students’ reading comprehension through Jigsaw technique in news item text. The research was conducted at tenth grade of SMAN 8 Serang in academic 2014/2015. This research used qualitative data by implementing classroom action research. The purpose of this research was to solve students’ problem in learning English especially reading comprehension. This research designed in four meetings and divided into two cycles. Every cycle has different topic to encourage student motivation. The cycle I discuss about current news of art in Indonesia and cycle II about culture that was adapted from e-magazine. The technique was useful in learning process. Jigsaw technique could be an alternative technique in teaching reading comprehension at tenth grade of SMAN 8 Serang. The result of the research showed that there are significance progresses of each session. The mean score of cycle I and cycle II was much higher than the mean of pre-test. The mean score of cycle I and cycle II showed the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension through jigsaw technique. It was improvement around 11,29 which the mean score of cycle I is 69,71 and the mean score of cycle II is 81.The process of teaching learning in improving reading comprehension in news text through jigsaw technique gave positive behavior and improvement for the students. The average score of pre-test and post-test was computed, the mean score was 37 and the mean score of post-test was 78. It means that the technique were able to improve students’ reading comprehension. Keyword: jigsaw technique, improving reading comprehension, news item text, teaching reading
