Abstract
Biocoating is a natural anti-corrosion material used as a coat that can easly degradated and be renewable. Rice Husk extract and Damar Gum is one of a good alternative bio-material which has been approved that it has a high silica content, so it can be used as a substitute for sythetic chemicals in protecting metals from corrosion. This research was conducted to determine the biocoating ability on a mild steel in 0.5 M of H2SO4 as corrosive media. Rice Husk and Damar Gum is used as the main raw materials. The analytical method used in this research is the weight loss method. Damar Gum and the silica sol-gel which have been obtained from the ashing process of the rice husks, are mixed together to form a homogeneous product. The mild steel samples that have been coated with the biocoating material are then immersed in a 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution, in a given variations of the silica concentration by 500, 1000, 1500 ppm, immersed time by 1, 2, and 3 hours, and at immersion temperature of 40, 60, and 80 °C, which is then ready to be tested for the ability of the biocoating material. The results show that the higher the temperature and the longer the immersion time has given to the samples, the corrosion rate on the metal increases, while the variation of 1500 ppm silica concentration shows better efficiency results than the other concentrations variation, that is equal to 90.8%, at a temperature of 40 oC and an immersion time of 1 hour.
