Abstract

Alternative journalism in Indonesia has increasingly emerged as a tool for critiquing and challenging biases and shortcomings of mainstream media, particularly in addressing sensitive social issues such as legal injustice. This study specifically analyzes the role of alternative journalism in social movements through a case study of the #PercumaLaporPolisi campaign, a movement that emerged in response to public dissatisfaction with what is perceived as ineffective and unjust law enforcement. The primary aim of this research is to explore how alternative journalism can highlight issues overlooked by mainstream media while mobilizing public opinion and social action. This research employs a qualitative approach with content analysis of alternative journalism coverage regarding the #PercumaLaporPolisi campaign, as well as in-depth interviews with journalists and activists involved in the campaign. The study assesses the impact of alternative journalism on public perception of law enforcement institutions and the level of community participation in social movements related to justice issues. The findings indicate that alternative journalism plays a significant role in reinforcing critical narratives against law enforcement institutions, as evidenced by increased public awareness and participation in the #PercumaLaporPolisi campaign. This supports the hypothesis that alternative journalism not only provides a platform for marginalized voices but also fosters social transformation by highlighting injustices and triggering collective action. In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of alternative journalism in influencing public opinion and enhancing community engagement, affirming its role as a key driver in social campaigns that challenge the status quo, such as #PercumaLaporPolisi.
