Abstract
Crab behaviour is one of the basic approaches in developing crab fishing technology. The crab's response and behaviour to bait were prominent factors in formulating effective bait. This study aims to determine the response and behaviour of crabs (Portunus pelagicus) to artificial bait on a laboratory scale. The artificial bait consists of carrageenan as much as 15 grams combined with attractants from pony fish extract with three different extract concentrations of 400 ml, 500 ml, and 600 ml. The research was conducted in the Capture Fisheries Technology Laboratory Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University from November 2023 to January 2024. The observations were done through direct observation and recorded using an infrared camera. Descriptive analysis is used to determine the most effective type of artificial bait for crab fishing. The results showed that each synthetic bait was responded to differently by crabs. The most effective bait formulation was artificial bait with a composition of 400 ml pony fish extract. As much as 40% of crabs had positive responses only in 7,3 minutes after observation has started. We concluded that artificial bait consisting of 400ml pony fish extract is a proper choice for blue swimming crab fishing using trap.
