Abstract

This research aims to determine the phenotypic appearance of three hybrid melon (Cucumis melo L.) superior variety candidates in the generative phase of PT Fitotech breeding results. This research is an experimental research carried out at the farmer-owned land of Team MF-Kedaireka UNTIRTA FITOTECH, Karangtengah Neighborhood, Pabean Village, Purwakarta District, Cilegon City. This research was conducted from November 2023 to February 2024. The research design used was a non-factorial Randomized Group Design (RGD) consisting of 5 treatments: 3 melon strains (UT-4, UT-5, and UT-6) and 2 comparison varieties (Alisha and Kinanti). Each treatment was repeated 5 times. Each variety was planted in all five experimental blocks and 10 plants were planted in each block. The total number of plants observed was 250 plants and 5 sample plants were taken from each treatment to observe the fruit. The results showed that there were differences in phenotypic appearance among the three candidate melon varieties tested in fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit length, fruit width, and sugar content. The uniformity of phenotypic appearance within each melon strain is shown by the coefficient of variation < 25% in each parameter. UT-4 and UT-6 can be recommended as new superior varieties of melon. Further research can be done multilocation test on UT-4 and UT-6 strains.
