Abstract

Manganese is one of the metals that is widely applied in the steel processing industry, fertilizer, food, and battery industry that is now growing rapidly. Manganese could potentially be processed into manganese sulfate precursors as the cathode raw material of NMC LIBs batteries to meet the increasing market needs. Manganese potential in Indonesia is spread in various regions, one of which is Trenggalek in East Java. XRF analysis of Trenggalek manganese ore showed that pyrolusite manganese ores with a grade of 44.05% are classified into the category of medium grade manganese ores that still have impurity elements in the ore. The manufacturing process of manganese sulfate is generally carried out by the method of reduction and acid leaching. However, the abundance of impurity elements in the ore such as Ca, Si, Al, Mg will affect the leaching process so it is necessary to carry out alkaline leaching pre-treatment to dissolve impurities such as Si, Al, Mg, Pb and Zn before proceeding with the reduction process. Thus, the effect of pre-treatment alkaline leaching on the solubility of impurity elements will be studied. In addition, variations in the concentration of leaching agent (H2SO4 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5M) and temperature (50, 70, 90 ℃) in the acid leaching process were also studied to determine the optimum conditions of the leaching process. The results showed that the alkaline leaching pre-treatment process was effective in reducing the impurity element Ca by 99.02%. The optimum leaching process was obtained under the condition of 2 M H2SO4 concentration with a temperature of 90 ℃. The extraction percentage of 72.23% was obtained with the purity level of manganese in manganese sulfate solution of 40.12% having met the minimum concentration of Mn as the standard of battery specification of 31.8% Mn.

Additional Information: Mangan merupakan salah satu logam yang banyak diaplikasikan di bidang industri pengolahan baja, pupuk, makanan, serta industri baterai yang kini semakin berkembang pesat. Mangan berpotensi diolah menjadi prekursor mangan sulfat sebagai bahan baku katoda baterai NMC LIBs untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pasar yang meningkat. Potensi mangan di Indonesia tersebar di berbagai daerah, salah satunya Trenggalek di Jawa Timur. Analisis XRF bijih mangan Trenggalek menunjukkan bijih mangan pirolusit dengan kadar 44,05% tergolong ke dalam kategori bijih mangan kadar menengah yang masih keterdapatan unsur – unsur pengotor pada bijih. Proses pembuatan mangan sulfat umumnya dilakukan dengan metode reduksi dan acid leaching. Namun, banyaknya unsur- unsur pengotor pada bijih seperti Ca, Si, Al, Mg akan memengaruhi proses leaching sehingga perlu dilakukan pre-treatment alkaline leaching untuk melarutkan pengotor seperti Si, Al, Mg, Pb dan Zn sebelum dilanjutkan proses reduksi. Maka, pengaruh pre-treatment alkaline leaching terhadap kelarutan unsur pengotor akan dipelajari. Selain itu, variasi konsentrasi leaching agent (H2SO4 1, 2, 3, 4, dan 5M) serta temperatur (50,70, 90 ℃) pada proses acid leaching juga dipelajari untuk menentukan kondisi optimum proses leaching. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses pre-treatment alkaline leaching efektif dalam mengurangi unsur pengotor Ca hingga 99,02%. Proses optimum leaching didapatkan pada kondisi konsentrasi H2SO4 2 M dengan temperatur 90 ℃ diperoleh persen ekstraksi sebesar 72,23% dengan kadar kemurnian mangan pada larutan mangan sulfat sebesar 40,12% telah memenuhi konsentrasi minimum Mn sebagai standar spesifikasi baterai yaitu 31,8% Mn
