Abstract
The aim of this research is to find out what are student difficulties in writing descriptive texts and the causes students have difficulties in writing descriptive texts. The limitations for students' difficulties in this research were organization, content, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics based on Brown (2004). This research used descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this research were 30 students in class X-3 and an English teacher at SMAN 1 Pamarayan. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. To analyze the data, the researcher used Miles and Huberman’s theory, there are three step to analyze the data, they were: 1) data condensation, 2) data display, and 3) verification/conclusion. The results showed that the students in class X-3 SMAN 1 Pamarayan had difficulties in indicators organization, content, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Data obtained from the results of student questionnaires showed difficulties that students face in writing descriptive texts, are organization 77.78%, content 73.06%, vocabulary 75.42%, grammar 81.39%, and mechanics 66.11%. In a detailed explanation, students do not understand the generic structure of descriptive text, students have difficulty developing ideas or content that they will write, students also have difficulty using correct grammar, apart from that vocabulary is also one of the difficulties students have in writing descriptive text, Furthermore, students also often make mistakes in punctuation and spelling. Beside that the causes of students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text were both internal and external factors. The internal factors were students not focused when studying, lack of practice, less learner motivation, less interested in English. Additional Information: | Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apa saja kesulitan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif dan penyebab siswa kesulitan dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Batasan kesulitan siswa dalam penelitian ini adalah pengorganisasian, isi, kosa kata, tata bahasa, dan mekanik berdasarkan teori Brown (2004). Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa kelas X-3 dan seorang guru bahasa Inggris di SMAN 1 Pamarayan. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan angket, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Untuk menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan teori Miles dan Huberman, ada tiga langkah dalam menganalisis data, yaitu: 1) kondensasi data, 2) penyajian data, dan 3) verifikasi/kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa kelas X-3 SMAN 1 Pamarayan mengalami kesulitan pada indikator organisasi, isi, kosa kata, tata bahasa, dan mekanik. Data yang diperoleh dari hasil angket siswa menunjukkan kesulitan yang dihadapi siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif adalah pengorganisasian 77,78%, isi 73,06%, kosakata 75,42%, tata bahasa 81,39%, dan mekanik 66,11%. Dalam penjelasan rinci, siswa kurang memahami struktur generik teks deskriptif, siswa kesulitan mengembangkan ide atau isi yang akan ditulisnya, siswa juga kesulitan menggunakan tata bahasa yang benar, selain itu kosakata juga menjadi salah satu kesulitan siswa dalam menulis. teks deskriptif, selain itu siswa juga sering melakukan kesalahan dalam tanda baca dan ejaan. Selain itu penyebab kesulitan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif adalah faktor internal dan eksternal. Faktor internalnya adalah siswa tidak fokus saat belajar, kurangnya latihan, kurangnya motivasi belajar siswa, kurangnya minat siswa terhadap bahasa Inggris.
