Abstract

Honeydew is one of the variety commodities classified to the fruticulture plants. Honeydew production in Banten Province experiences fluctuations annually. The fluctuation in honeydew production is partly due to the availability of superior seeds, as currently cultivated honeydew varieties by farmers are imported from Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan. Indonesia honeydew production can be enhanced through plant breeding programs aimed at producing high-quality honeydew seeds. This reseach was an experimental conducted at experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, Serang Regency, Banten. The objective was to gather information on the characteristics of honeydew strains and to identify the best quantitative and qualitative characteristics among these strains. The study utilized a Randomized Blocked Design (RBD), consisting of five honeydew genotypes divided into three tester genotypes (UT1, UT2, UT3) and two check genotypes (Alisha & Kinanti). Response design in the study was divided into two: quantitative and qualitative characteristics. The response design aimed to determine if there were tester genotypes that could be developed into potential new superior honeydew varieties. Quantitative parameters were divided into six parameters. The results significant effects were observed in fruit cracking, fruit width, fruit thickness, and fruit weight, with comparison genotypes outperforming tester genotypes. However, no significant difference was observed in fruit skin hardness and flesh thickness. Regarding brix content, a significant difference was noted, with check genotypes exhibiting higher superiority compared to tester genotypes. Qualitative parameters are five. Color with all genotype in flesh color were observed in Kinanti is 17C, while flesh texture differed in Alisha is soft. Fruit shape and skin type showed uniform results across all genotypes. No results of the tester genotypes displayed superior quantitative characteristics compared to the check genotypes. However, UT2 and UT3 could be considered as alternative candidates for new superior honeydew varieties due to their relatively similar quantitative characteristics to the check genotypes and consistent qualitative characteristics.

Additional Information: Melon merupakan salah satu komoditas hortikultura yang tergolong pada tanaman frutikultur. Produksi tanaman melon di Provinsi Banten mengalami fluktuatif setiap tahunnya. Terjadinya fluktuatif hasil produksi melon ini salah satunya dikarenakan ketersediaan benih unggul dimana pada saat ini varietas melon yang di budidayakan petani merupakan varietas melon impor dari Taiwan, Thailand dan Jepang, Peningkatan produksi tanaman melon nasional dapat dilakukan program pemuliaan tanaman, program pemuliaan tanaman dilakukan untuk menghasilkan benih melon unggul berkualitas, maka dari itu dilakukan penelitian ini. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen yang dilaksanakan dilahan percobaan Fakultas Pertanian UNTIRTA, Kp. Cikuya Karang Kitri, Kabupaten Serang, Banten. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai karakter hasil galur-galur melon dan mendapatkan informasi karakter kuantitatif maupun kualitatif terbaik dari galur-galur melon. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan acak kelompok (RAK) satu faktor yang terdiri dari lima galur melon yang dibagi menjadi tiga galur uji (UT1, UT2, UT3) dan dua galur pembading Alisha dan Kinanti. Rancangan respons dalam penelitian ini dibagi menjadi dua yaitu karakter kuantitatif dan karakter kualitatif.
