Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim to determine the effect of problem- based learning model by paying attention to cognitive load theory on students' conceptual understanding and problem solving skills. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 10 Kota Serang in the 2023/2024 school year with a sample of class VII B as a control class that received learning with the usual problem-based learning model and class VII D as an experimental class that received learning with a problem-based learning model modified by cognitive load theory. The method used in this research is a mixed method explanative design model with quantitative methods as primary methods and qualitative methods as secondary methods. This research is limited to two topics on mathematical skills, namely conceptual understanding and problem solving. The results showed that the conceptual understanding ability and mathematical skills of students in the treated class had better achievements than students who were not treated. In addition, learning with a problem-based learning model by taking into account the cognitive load of students can equalize the conceptual understanding and problem solving abilities of students who have low, medium, and high initial abilities of students.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh model problem based learning dengan memperhatikan cognitive load theory terhadap kemampuan pemahaman konseptual dan pemecahan masalah siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMP Negeri 10 Kota Serang pada tahun ajaran 2023/2024 dengan sampel kelas VII B sebagai kelas kontrol yang menerima pembelajaran dengan model problem based learning biasa dan kelas VII D sebagai kelas eksperimen yang menerima pembelajaran dengan model problem based learning termodifikasi cognitive load theory. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu metode campuran model explanative design dengan metode kuantitatif sebagai metode primer dan metode kualitatif sebagai metode sekunder. Penelitian ini dibatasi pada dua topik dari kecakapan matematis yaitu pemahaman konseptual dan kompetensi strategis yang didalamnya terdapat indikator yang meliputi kemampuan pemecahan masalah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan pemahaman konseptual dan pemecahan masalah siswa pada kelas yang diberikan perlakuan memiliki capaian lebih baik dari siswa yang tidak diberi perlakuan dengan pembelajaran problem based leraning dengan pengelolaan beban kognitif. Selain itu, pembelajaran dengan model problem based learning dengan memperhatikan beban kognitif siswa dapat menyeragami kemampuan pemahaman konseptual dan pemecahan masalah siswa yang memiliki kemampuan awal yang rendah, sedang, dan tinggi.
