Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the rhetorical devices that were used in Joe Biden’s Victory speech and to find out and analyze the functions of said rhetorical devices. This research was classified as a textual analysis design using a qualitative research approach and the content that was analyzed was Joe Biden’s Victory Speech. The data was obtained from textual analysis of Joe Biden’s transcription that was retrieved from several online news sources, and content analysis of several online videos. The result of the first objective the researcher have found 17 uses of rhetorical devices. Furthermore, it can be concluded that antithesis rhetorical devices frequently have been used the most. The result of the second objective, regarding the function of the rhetorical devices, there are 7 instances of the use of emphasis rhetorical devices, this amount of frequent uses beats the other two function: transition and decoration, for transition there is only 6 instances, and for decoration there is only 4 uses. For the sub-category, the most used sub-category for the emphasis rhetorical device is clarification. The researcher conclude that Joe Biden understood the importance of emphasis to deliver a ground breaking speech. For the suggestions, for politicians this research can be a reference of the successful and unsuccessful uses of rhetorical devices to increase their communication skills, for the teachers, they should be able to acquire this knowledge and spread it to the students in formal teaching environment, for the next researcher, the research could benefit from more than one speech to be analyzed, also to approach the research with a discourse analysis background to get a deep explanation of the rhetorical devices was constructed in the speech.
