Abstract

Studies show that psychological factors and academic performance affect one’s decision in career choice as a prospective English teacher. Therefore, this research was conducted to see whether each psychological factor (motivations, beliefs) and academic performance correlate and influence both partially and simultaneously English pre-service teachers' interest in career choice as a prospective teacher. A quantitative method with a correlational design and multivariate analysis was deployed in this research. A close-ended questionnaire was utilized to collect the data on motivations, beliefs, and GPA and administered to 81 English Education Department pre-service teachers with cohort 2019 as the population in a public university in Banten Province. Data analysis showed a significant level of 0.05 with a degree of freedom of 79, resulting in 0.218. The Pearson Product Moment results between motivations and interest in a teaching career was 0.077, lower than the r-table (0.077< 0.218), beliefs in interest in a teaching career was 0.108, lower than the r-table (0.108 < 0.1946) and academic performance value lower than r-table with 0.029. The degree of adjusted R Square was -0.023%, where 99.971% of factors were not included in this research. It can be inferred that motivations, beliefs, and academic performance have a weak correlation and influence on English Education Department pre-service teachers' interest in a teaching career. Some theories indicate other factors like socialization (family support, peers, teachers), professional (salary, workload), and the teaching programs that were not included in this research seem to potentially affect their career choice as a teacher.

Analisis data menunjukkan tingkat signifikan sebesar 0,05 dengan derajat kebebasan sebesar 79 sehingga diperoleh hasil sebesar 0,218. Hasil Pearson Product Moment antara motivasi dan minat berkarir mengajar sebesar 0,077 lebih rendah dari r tabel (0,077< 0,218), keyakinan terhadap minat berkarir mengajar sebesar 0,108 lebih rendah dari r tabel (0,108 < 0,1946) dan nilai prestasi akademik lebih rendah dari r-tabel sebesar 0,029. Derajat Adjusted R Square sebesar -0,023% dimana terdapat 99,971% faktor yang tidak dimasukkan dalam penelitian ini. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa motivasi, keyakinan, dan kinerja akademik memiliki korelasi dan pengaruh yang lemah terhadap minat guru pra-jabatan Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dalam karir mengajar. Beberapa teori menunjukkan faktor-faktor lain seperti sosialisasi (dukungan keluarga, teman sebaya, guru), profesional (gaji, beban kerja), dan program pengajaran yang tidak termasuk dalam penelitian ini tampaknya berpotensi mempengaruhi pilihan karir mereka sebagai guru.
