Abstract
This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of using contextual teaching and learning approach in teaching writing procedural text at the ninth-grade of junior high school in Serang city. This study was conducted by quasi-experimental design. The population of this study was the students of the ninth-grade of junior high school in Serang city (SMPN 3 Kota Serang). The samples were distributed in two classes, an experimental class and control class. The experimental group was taught by using contextual teaching and learning approach and control group was taught without using contextual teaching and learning approach. To collect the data, this research used written pre-test and post-test as the instrument. The data were analyzed by using validity, reliability, normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis test formula and t-test. Hypothesis testing revealed that value of t-test was higher than the value of t-table (8.227 > 1.66). It indicated the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It implied that contextual teaching and learning approach affected students’ writing skill. Furthermore, the statistical calculation showed that the sig-2 tailed value is 0.000, which is smaller than (0.05), which implied a moderate effectiveness of using contextual teaching and learning approach to teach writing skills in procedural text. In conclusion, contextual teaching and learning approach could be an alternative technique for teacher to help students improve their writing skills in Learning English.

Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi efektivitas penggunaan pendekatan pembelajaran kontekstual dalam mengajar teks prosedur pada siswa kelas sembilan SMP di Kota Serang. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan desain kuasi eksperimen. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas sembilan SMP di Kota Serang (SMPN 3 Kota Serang). Sampel dibagi dalam dua kelas, yaitu kelas eksperimental dan kelas kontrol. Kelas eksperimental dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran kontekstual dan kelas kontrol dilakukan tanpa menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran kontekstual. Teknik mengumpulkan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan pre-test dan post-test tertulis sebagai instrumen. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan validitas, reliabilitas, normalitas, homogenitas, dan rumus uji hipotesis serta t-test. Uji hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa nilai t-test lebih tinggi dari nilai t-tabel (8.227 > 1.66). Ini menunjukkan hipotesis nol ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif diterima. Hal ini menyiratkan bahwa pendekatan pembelajaran kontekstual mempengaruhi keterampilan menulis siswa. Lebih lanjut, perhitungan statistik menunjukkan bahwa nilai sig-2 tailed adalah 0.000, yang lebih kecil dari (0.05), yang menyiratkan keefektifan penggunaan pendekatan pembelajaran kontekstual untuk mengajar keterampilan menulis teks prosedur. Kesimpulannya, pendekatan pembelajaran kontekstual bisa menjadi teknik alternatif bagi guru untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan keterampilan menulis dalam Belajar Bahasa Inggris. | |||||||||
