Abstract

ABSTRACT Surface coating process using electric arc spray is an attempt to improve the properties of the metal surface. Protecting base metal from damaging environmental conditions, then the required result which has a value layer hardness, corrosion resistance and good strength layer. This study aims to determine the effect of spray distance on hardness, corrosion resistance and strength of the layer. Electric arc wire spraying using twin wires are fed to the heat flow. Arc will arise between the two ends of the wire feed (stainless steel 316) and next formed heat will melt both ends of the wire. At high pressure gas flows (6 bar) which will bring the liquid to the surface of the metal substrate. Surface of the first substrate is cleaned and made rough by grit blasting then coated with a first layer of 95% Ni5% Al and a second layer of 316 stainless steel by varying the spray distance (10cm, 20cm, 30cm). This technique usually used to coat the surface of the steel roller, roll up, roll plastic and reclaim hydraulic rams, pistons, shafts and bearings. The test results in this study showed higher hardness values after being coated, the maximum value obtained at a spray distance of 20 cm with a value of 332 VHN. Corrosion rate decreases with the best values obtained at a distance of 30 cm spray of 1.1526 mpy. The maximum strength of the layer obtained at a distance of 30 cm with a value of 4071.94 psi. Keywords: electric arc spray, hardness, corrosion and coating strength.
