Abstract

The objectives of this research was to find out ye effectiveness of four square techique in teaching descriptive writing at seventh grade of SMPN 13 Kota Serang. This research was an experimental research with pre-test and post-test as instruments of the research. The two of eight classes were taken as the research sample by using cluster random sampling. The class was chosen as the experimental class that was treated by using four square technique in teaching descriptive writing and control class was the class that did not use four square technique. The result of this research revealed that four square technique was effective to improve students’ writing skill, especially in descriptive text. It was indicated by the result of means’ score of students post-test in experimetal class (76.02) was higher than control class (69.7). in the other hand, t-test was used to know the effectiveness of four square technique in teaching descriptive writing. From the result of t-test calculation in post-test, it was obatined that tvalue was higher tha ttable (3.000 ≤ 2.000). It was identified that experimental and control class has significant differences in writing descriptive text after treatment. In conclusion, the four square technique was effective in teaching students’ writing skill of descriptive text.
