Abstract

This research is conducted in order to develop students’ speaking ability through chain drill game at eighth grade of SMPN 7 Cilegon and also to help the English teacher of SMPN 7 Cilegon in teaching speaking skill, so that it will encourage the students in learning English. In conducting this research, the researcher used Calssroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of research. The researcher acts as the teacher. She taught conversation on the phone and recount text through chain drill game. This research consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of four elements, they were: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Each cycle was conducted in three meetings, so the researcher conducted this research in six meetings for three weeks. To collect and analyze the data, the researcher used pre-test and post test. The result of this research shows that using chain drill game in teaching speaking English can motivate the students to learn English and develop their speaking ability. The students’ responses showed that they were interested to learn English because they thought that chain drill game was interesting and fun. Moreover, the analysis of students’ achievements in pre-test, post test I and post test II shows an improvement. The result of pre-test is 55,3 and the result of test in cycle one is 70,6. The improvement between pre-test and the result of test in cycle one is 15.3%. For the result of test in cycle two is 82,7. The percentage of improvement from the result of test in cycle one and the result of test in cycle two is 12,1%. From this result, the researcher concludewd that teaching English through chain drill game can develop students’ speaking ability.
