Abstract
The increase in the number of laundry industries every year is in line with the increase in waste generated. Usually the resulting laundry waste will be directly discharged into the environment without prior processing which will cause environmental damage. Some of the factors that cause environmental damage from laundry waste are marked by the high concentrations of BOD, COD and LAS in laundry waste. In this research, an alternative laundry waste treatment was carried out with an adsorption process using adsorbents from chicken egg shells and applied to laundry waste processing equipment. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum conditions of the adsorption process in the form of variations in length of contact time, concentration, surface area of the adsorbent on the decrease in levels of BOD, COD and LAS. The adsorbent will be made and activated in glass using a temperature of 6000C then pulverized to a size of 50, 100, 150 and 200 mesh, then added as much as 5, 10, 15 and 20 grams of adsorbent to 1 liter of liquid waste then the process of stirring is 130 rpm with variations contact time 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. Then the optimum condition of this variation will be installed into the design of a laundry wastewater treatment tool which will be compared with the adsorption results with a laundry waste treatment tool that uses activated carbon adsorbents. The results showed that the highest decrease in BOD, COD and LAS levels occurred at a concentration of 20 g/L with efficiency 66.67%, 80% dan 80%; size of 150 mesh with efficiency 23.09%, 67.34% dan 74.55%; and adsorption time of 90 minutes with efficiency 28.83%, 38.85% dan 35.67% The optimum adsorption conditions for reducing BOD, COD and LAS levels using eggshells in this study were adsorption time of 90 minutes, eggshell size of 150 mesh and adsorbent concentration of 20 grams per liter. The kinetics of the adsorption process used in adsorption laundry waste using egg shells is the Freundlich isotherm equation. The adsorption capacity of using chicken egg shell adsorbents was better than that of activated carbon adsorbents in laundry waste treatment modifications. However, the designed laundry wastewater treatment equipment cannot be applied to the processing of laundry waste disposed of in class 2 rivers
