Abstract

Membaca ekstensif dapat memperoleh peran memotivasi siswa bahasa untuk mencapai prestasi dalam pembelajaran bahasa dan akademik. Mempertimbangkan bahwa novel mungkin bisa menjadi sarana terbaik untuk membaca ekstensif, penelitian ini adalah bertujuan untuk mengetahui sikap membaca mahasiswa bahasa Inggris semester empat Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa terhadap penggunaan novel dalam Bacaan Ekstensif kursus. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah wawancara, kelas observasi, dan kuesioner. Berdasarkan wawancara dengan dosen, ada adalah lima novel yang harus dibaca siswa bahasa Inggris secara individual dengan menggunakan reading strategi. Mereka diharuskan membaca setidaknya lima halaman per hari dan diberi dua minggu untuk membaca setiap novel. Di akhir sesi, ada grup presentasi di mana siswa bahasa Inggris harus menganalisis satu novel dengan menggunakan a pendekatan membaca sastra tertentu. Hasil kuesioner tertutup menunjukkan bahwa siswa bahasa Inggris memiliki sikap membaca yang kurang baik, ditunjukkan dengan total skor 1061 atau 73,6%. Ketidakcukupan diperkuat oleh hampir setengah tanggapan siswa bahasa Inggris yang tidak diketahui terhadap kuesioner terbuka, meskipun sisanya yang tanggapannya cenderung lebih positif. Selanjutnya wawancara melibatkan delapan perwakilan siswa bahasa Inggris memperoleh lebih banyak konfirmasi informasi dan hasil observasi kelas menunjukkan kurang memuaskan kegiatan pasca membaca. Kesimpulannya, sikap membaca siswa bahasa Inggris terhadap Penggunaan novel dalam mata kuliah Membaca Ekstensif tentunya kurang menguntungkan.

Additional Information: Extensive reading can obtain the role of motivating language students to achieve accomplishment in both language and academic learning. Considering that novel can possibly be the best means for extensive reading, this research was aimed to investigate reading attitudes of fourth semester English students of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University to the use of novel in Extensive Reading course. The methods used to collect the data were interview, classroom observation, and questionnaire. Based on the interview with the lecturer, there were five novels the English students had to read individually by using reading strategies. They were required to read at least five pages per day and were given two weeks to read each novel. At the end of the session, there was a group presentation in which the English students had to analyse one novel by using a certain literature-reading approach. The result of close-ended questionnaire showed that the English students had less favourable reading attitudes, indicated by the total score 1061 or 73.6%. The inadequacy was strengthened by nearly half of the English students’ unknown responses to the open-ended questionnaire, despite the rest whose responses tended to be more positive. Further, the interview involving eight representatives of the English students gained more confirmative information and the result of classroom observation pointed out the unsatisfactory post-reading activity. In conclusion, the English students’ reading attitudes to the use of novel in Extensive Reading course were assuredly less favourable.
