Abstract

This study is conducted in order to improve the students’ speaking skill of the first grade of SMAN 14 Tangerang by using storytelling. Therefore, the design of this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject of this study was the first grade students of SMAN 14 Tangerang that consist of 28 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and the procedure consisted of four main steps: planning the action, implementation, observation, and reflection. The instruments used to collect the data were: observation, questionnaire, speaking test, and documentation. The result of the study showed that the students’ speaking skill was improved from 63.21 to 76.46 until 84.05 after the researcher implemented storytelling in the classroom. They felt enthusiastic, it made them more confidence to speak and retell the folktale. They could retell the story by their own word without feeling afraid and shy. They felt very confidence and comfortable in their performance. It indicates that the research was successful. Key words: Speaking skill, Storytelling, Folktale
