Abstract

The objective of this study is to explore how the communication accommodation strategies is employed by students and the underlying motives during their presentations. This research applied a case study method, involved 35 students of X TKJ 1 at SMK Negeri 7 Pandeglang. Data were collected through non-participant observation and unstructured interviews. The findings revealed that most students predominantly used convergence strategies over divergence strategies. Convergence strategies included using the same code, code-switching, translating, developing topics, extending utterances, repetition, and employing non-verbal cues such as expressive facial, gestures and pauses to emphasize key points. In contrast, divergence strategies included shifting speech rate and showing a different code. Furthermore, the study found that students’ communication accommodation strategies were driven by affective and cognitive motives. Affective motives aimed to build rapport with the audience, while cognitive motives focused on enhancing audience understanding. The findings indicate that cognitive motives were predominant, as students prioritized making their communication more comprehensible.
