Abstract

Austenitic stainless steel is a stainless steel that is widely used in both industrial and non-industrial worlds because it has very good corrosion resistance, good formability and good weldability. SS316L is one of the austenitic stainless steel materials with low carbon content so that it requires the addition of other elements to increase the hardness of this type of stainless steel. Pack carburizing is the process of adding carbon to the surface of low carbon steel through a diffusion process at austenitic temperature. The pack carburizing process is carried out at a temperature of 950ºC with variations in the composition of 60% charcoal plus 40% catalyst, 70% charcoal plus 30% catalyst, and 80% charcoal plus 20% catalyst; and holding time for 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours. The tests used include hardness, microstructure, and case depth tests. The results of this study indicate that the highest hardness value is 164 HV in specimens with variations in the composition of carburizing media of 80% coconut shell charcoal powder plus 20% BaCO3 with a holding time pack carburizing for 4 hours. The highest case depth value was obtained by specimens with variations in the composition of carburizing media of 70% coconut shell charcoal powder plus 30% BaCCO3 with a value of 39.064μm. The SS316L sample after the pack carburizing process has an austenite microstructure that is rich in carbon and there are also carbides located at the grain boundaries.

Additional Information: Austenitic stainless steel merupakan baja tahan karat yang banyak digunakan dalam dunia industri maupun non industri karena memiliki ketahanan korosi yang sangat baik, sifat mampu bentuk yang baik dan kemampuan las yang baik. SS316L merupakan salah satu material austenitic stainless steel dengan kandungan karbon yang rendah sehingga perlu penambahan unsur lain untuk meningkatkan kekerasan dari stainless steel jenis ini. Pack carburizing merupakan proses penambahan karbon pada permukaan baja karbon rendah melalui proses difusi pada temperatur austenitic. Proses pack carburizing dilakukan pada temperatur 950ºC dengan variasi komposisi 60% arang ditambah 40% katalis, 70% arang ditambah 30% katalis, dan 80% arang ditambah 20% katalis; serta holding time selama 2 jam, 3 jam, dan 4 jam. Pengujian yang digunakan meliputi uji kekerasan, struktur mikro, dan case depth. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai kekerasan tertinggi yaitu sebesar 164 HV pada spesimen dengan variasi komposisi media karburasi 80% serbuk arang tempurung kelapa ditambah dengan 20% BaCO3 dengan holding time pack carburizing selama 4 jam. Nilai case depth tertinggi diperoleh oleh spesimen dengan variasi komposisi media karburasi 70% serbuk arang tempurung kelapa ditambah dengan 30% BaCCO3 dengan nilai sebesar 39,064μm. Pada sampel SS316L setelah proses pack carburizing memiliki struktur mikro austenite yang kaya akan karbon dan juga terdapat karbida yang terletak pada batas butir.
