Abstract

Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is a cellulose derivative obtained from the process of exchanging cellulose hydroxyl groups with carboxyl groups. The conventional CMC manufacturing process has a slow reaction rate so that technological developments are needed to speed up the reaction rate, namely by using a reactor microwave. The purpose of this study is to obtain the optimum conditions for the synthesis of CMC from bacterial cellulose (nata de coco) using a reactor microwave. CMC is widely applied in the industrial world as an emulsion stabilizer, stabilizer, and thickener. The methods used in this study were alkalization and carboxymethylation with various concentrations of NaOH solutions of 10%, 20% and 30%, and reaction times of 10, 20, 30 and 60 minutes. Optimum conditions at the reaction temperature of 50OC was obtained at a concentration of 30% NaOH and a reaction time of 60 minutes with a value of percentage degree of substitution of 93.80%. Heating with the help of microwaves is more controlled when compared to conventional heating because it can speed up the reaction time.
