Abstract
Steel slag is the main waste product that occurs in the steelmaking process in the furnace which comes from the reaction of smelting iron with oxidizers. Waste steel Slag can be used as aggregate, fertilizer and cement, but there are problems in its utilization due to the high content of free calcium oxide (f-CaO) in steel slag. This content results in volume expansion instability that causes expansion and cracking in building and road materials. To reduce the f-CaO content in steel slag, natural aging can be done but it takes a long time. For this reason, an accelerated aging method is carried out in order to shorten the time. One of the methods is steam aging treatment. Steam aging is an aging process using water vapor to reduce the f-CaO content. In this study, the steam aging process was carried out using a steamer with an aging time of 8 hours; 10 hours; 12 hours and with particle sizes of -20+35#, -35+50# and -50+100#. Then the volumetric titration process is carried out to find out what % of f-CaO content in the sample and whether the f-CaO content in this steel slag has decreased or decreased. From the steam aging test results, the % f-CaO content was obtained sequentially as 0.36; 0.31; 0.26; and 0.24. Based on these results, it can be proven that the steam aging process can be used to reduce the %f-CaO content in steel slag by 30%.
