Abstract

Composites are the result of material engineering consisting of two or more materials with different properties for each material to complement each constituent material. Composites are widely used in aerospace, automotive and other industries. Composite materials consist of matrix and reinforcement. The reinforcement used is natural fiber. Natural fibers have a low density, are easily recycled, cheap, have good mechanical properties and are renewable and do not pollute the environment. In this research, the matrix used is polyester resin, reinforced with natural fibers that are palm fibers with a ratio between matrix and fiber that is 95% : 5%, 90% : 10% and 85% : 15%. While the ratio between matrix and catalyst is 10 : 0.5, 10 : 1, and 10 : 1.5. Palm fiber is pretreated first with 5% NaOH solution for 2 hours. Composite manufacturing is carried out using the vacuum bag method according to the mold used. The samples obtained were subjected to tensile tests based on ASTM D3039 standards and compression tests based on ASTM D695 standards. The result of this study is a vacuum bag device that has been designed and a natural fiber composite sample made using the vacuum bag method. The highest tensile strength value was obtained by the composite with a fiber fraction of 10% 17.61 MPa, with a ratio between resin and catalyst of 10: 0.5. The highest compressive strength value was obtained by the composite with a fiber fraction of 5% 80.47 MPa, with a ratio between resin and catalyst of 10: 0.5. Statistical test results about tensile strength values, normality test values, sig. A value of 0.600 > 0.05 means that the data from the tension test results are normally distributed, the homogeneity test results are sig. 0.346 > 0.05 means that the tensile test data is homogeneous and the ANOVA results are sig. 0.006 < 0.05 means that the catalyst variation affects the tensile test results. Whereas, the statistical results of the compressive strength value of the sig normality test. A value of 0.635 > 0.05 means that the compression test result data is normally distributed, the homogeneity test result is sig. 0.037 < 0.05 means that the data from the compression test is not homogeneous and the ANOVA results are sig. 0.032 < 0.05 means that the catalyst variation affects the pressure test results.

Additional Information: Komposit merupakan hasil rekayasa material yang terdiri dari dua atau lebih bahan dengan sifat masing-masing bahan berbeda guna saling melengkapi masing-masing material penyusunnya. Komposit banyak digunakan dalam bidang kedirgantaraan, otomotif, dan industri lainnya. Material komposit terdiri dari matriks dan penguat. Penguat yang digunakan adalah serat alam. Serat alam memiliki massa jenis yang rendah, mudah didaur ulang, murah, memiliki sifat mekanik yang baik dan dapat diperbaharui serta tidak mencemari lingkungan. Pada penelitian ini matriks yang digunakan adalah resin polyester, berpenguat serat alam yaitu serat ijuk dengan rasio antara matriks dan serat yaitu 95% : 5%, 90% : 10% dan 85% : 15%. Sedangkan rasio antara matriks dan katalis sebesar 10 : 0,5, 10 : 1, dan 10 : 1,5. Serat ijuk dilakukan pretreatment terlebih dahulu dengan larutan NaOH 5% selama 2 jam. Pembuatan komposit dilakukan dengan metode vacuum bag sesuai dengan cetakan yang digunakan. Sampel yang diperoleh dilakukan uji tarik berdasarkan standar ASTM D3039 dan uji tekan berdasarkan standar ASTM D695. Hasil dari penelitian ini yaitu alat vacuum bag yang sudah dirancang dan sampel komposit serat alam yang terbuat dengan menggunakan metode vacuum bag. Nilai kuat tarik tertinggi diperoleh komposit dengan fraksi serat 10% sebesar 17,61 MPa, dengan rasio antara resin dan katalis sebesar 10 : 0,5. Nilai kuat tekan tertinggi diperoleh komposit dengan fraksi serat 5% sebesar 80,47 MPa, dengan rasio antara resin dan katalis sebesar 10 : 0,5. Hasil uji statistik pada nilai kuat tarik nilai uji normalitas sig. Sebesar 0,600 > 0,05 artinya data hasil uji tarik terdistribusi normal, hasil uji homogenitas sig. 0,346 > 0,05 artinya data hasil uji tarik bersifat homogen dan hasil ANOVA sig. 0,006 < 0,05 artinya variasi katalis mempengaruhi hasil uji tarik. Sedangkan hasil statistik pada nilai kuat tekan uji normalitas sig. Sebesar 0,635 > 0,05 artinya data hasil uji tekan terdistribusi normal, hasil uji homogenitas sig. 0,037 < 0,05 artinya data hasil uji tekan bersifat tidak homogen dan hasil ANOVA sig. 0,032 < 0,05 artinya variasi katalis mempengaruhi hasil uji tekan.
